In-Flight Starlings with Allis Markham

February 21st & 22nd

Class is from 10:00am to 6:00pm Saturday and from 10am to 3:00pm Sunday.
$725.00
Take the next step with bird taxidermy and learn to make them truly soar. In-flight bird taxidermy is a whole other method when it comes to wiring, posing, structural stability, and, of course, grooming out those wing feathers. Learn Allis' tips and tricks for creating beautiful and realistic birds that will truly defy gravity.

This class is recommended for those with bird taxidermy experience, graduates of Birds 101, or beginners who have extremely good hand skills / fast learners. This course will NOT include bird prep or body creation; students typically learn these skills in Birds 101 and graduates of that class are ideal students for In-Flight.

This is a professional-level taxidermy class using only top-quality specimens, tools, and supplies. Our space is a dedicated 1800 sq ft working taxidermy studio servicing museums, nature centers, and institutions around the country. You will not find another class like this in the world.

You'll learn the same techniques used by the team at Prey Taxidermy for their clients, including Natural History Museums around the country, The Smithsonian, The Getty Research Institute, and even brands such as Gucci.

Each student will start with a pre-prepared skin in A+ condition and a pre-made body form. Students will learn how to read reference, proper wiring for their choice of in-flight pose, eye setting, mounting, posing for in-flight, grooming with silicone caulk, wing work for in-flight, curling feathers, and taping/tying their own bird to take home. Prey will provide all supplies, tools, and specimens for your classes. Students will also be given a PDF of detailed step-by-step instructions, supply lists, tool lists, and resources.

***Example Starling by Prey Taxidermy apprentice, Christine Chang**

We will be working on European Starlings that were collected as nuisance animals. Their deaths are not related to the art of taxidermy. These are invasive species (not native to North America) and were taken as part of pest control. They eat crops and destroy the nests of native birds.

This is an intensive workshop, so be prepared to work and focus each day. The second day can go slightly over time, depending on the students. *Do not plan to miss any moment of class; i.e., arriving late or leaving early. If you choose to fly in for In-Flight, do not plan to fly out quickly after class, as the second day can go over time. A 'red-eye' is best if you must leave on Sunday. If you are traveling with your completed bird, we recommend bringing a 12" x 8" x 16" box to carry with you on the plane.

We ask that this class be attended only by students 18 years of age or older. For information and FAQs about Prey classes, please visit our class information page.
