Mammal Taxidermy - Skunks
Class will be held 9:30AM - 6PM each day.
This class is recommended for both beginners and those with taxidermy experience looking to learn small mammal taxidermy using museum techniques. Skunks are an excellent way to start learning mammal taxidermy; they are relatively simple but take you through the same process used on other mammals such as Raccoons, Coyotes, Foxes, Mountain Lions, & other larger mammals.
Allis was trained at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles -- and actually created the Skunks in the diorama there! She now has a World Title from the World Taxidermy Championships. Her clients include multiple Natural History Museums around the country, The Smithsonian, The Getty Research Institute, The Bellagio Hotel & Casino and even brands such as Gucci.
Each student will work with a tanned skin and learn proper museum techniques to mount their own Skunk: sizing your form, modification of a commercial form, skin fitting, creating/setting paws, wrapping a tail, sewing, facial details, and grooming/finishing work. Students will also focus on sculpting realistic expressions and how to properly utilize reference material. I will also give a demonstration on skinning and tanning (along with our tanning formula) so that you are ready to continue your taxidermy journey.
All supplies, tools & specimens will be provided by Prey for your classes. Students will also be given a PDF of each step, supply lists, tools lists, and resources that might help you on your taxidermy journey.
We will be working on Striped Skunks collected as part of pest control/abatement. Because of urban encroachment, some Skunks become dependent on humans for food. Skunk populations have also increased beyond what would be natural. These Skunks have been removed from the population for those reasons.
Their deaths are not related to the art and are simply a by-product of pest & population management.
This is an intensive workshop, so be prepared to work and focus each day. We ask that this class be attended only by students 15 years of age or older-- though exceptions can be made under certain conditions. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for details.
Students may leave a 50% deposit on this class. Simply enter the code 'SKUNKDEPOSIT' at checkout and pay your balance on or before Feb 1st.
