This is a wonderful introduction to working on small mammals with the 'wrapped body' and cast head technique. They require minimal sewing, have tough skin, and are incredibly cute.
In this one-day class students will learn how to wrap custom mammal bodies and mold/cast in order to create their own head forms for their ermine. There is no pre-requisite for this class, however returning students or those who feel they have good art/hand skills are preferred. This is a unique opportunity to learn how to create expertly crafted small mammals that are extremely posable, but are anatomically accurate. And, you get to take home an adorable completed taxidermy Ermine!
We will use museum quality techniques to create properly custom bodies whose measurements match your individual specimen. In addition, we will show you how to prepare/fit your skin on your bodies with animals that have already been skinned, prepped and tanned. (Pre-prepped & tanned skins save time while ensuring each specimen is properly preserved.)
In this class you will learn: carcass measuring, wrapped-body techniques, skull molding with silicone, polyurethane casting of head form, create/insert your own ear-liners, shape nose, set eyes, tuck eye lids, tuck mouth, create/set paws, wrap tail, sew your mount and finishing work. Students will also focus on sculpting realistic expressions/poses and how to properly utilize reference material.
After your piece dries it will need pin removal, grooming, painting and mounting. Each student will be offered a free extra session at Prey to work on these elements by making an appointment at their leisure.
All supplies, tools & specimens will be provided and are included in the class fee. We will be working with specimens that were collected as nuisance or over-populated animals. Deaths not related to the art. There are abatement specimens.
